Google first led us to believe that Android 14’s final, stable release will arrive some time in August, just as it did with Android 13 last year, despite the fact that the operating system has been in beta testing for many months. Contrary to popular belief, the stable version did not arrive in September as anticipated after a few extra betas were included in the release cycle.
Okay, so that’s it. A Google software update ought to be released today as yesterday was Labor Day in the US (these updates typically release on the first Monday of each month unless that Monday falls on a holiday in the US, in which case they are postponed to the following day).It might not be Android 14, though. According to recent rumors, Google abruptly decided to push back the stable release date to October.
As you can see, it will reportedly launch on October 4, which also happens to be the day of Google’s upcoming significant hardware reveal, when the Pixel 8, Pixel 8 Pro, and Pixel Watch 2 are anticipated to be completely unveiled. That would result in a situation that is rather unusual because new Google releases are often released at least a month, if not two, before the new hardware.
The reason for this delay is completely unknown, but things haven’t been going well with Android 14 for a few weeks now. We first noticed a problem when Google unexpectedly released the fifth beta. Now it appears that the root issue hasn’t been properly addressed (or fixed) yet, whatever it may be.
Of course, this is all a rumor, and Google still has time to prove it wrong by releasing Android 14 before October 4. Let’s see what happens.
Even Google’s phone-making partners apparently believed the release would occur today, as evidenced by the fact that some of them — OnePlus comes to mind — even announced their own Android 14 stable releases for later this month. What will happen to that promise at this point is uncertain.
Naturally, all of this is just hearsay, and Google still has time to disprove it by making Android 14 available before October 4. Let’s wait and see.
