Meta and LG will release a $2,000 VR headset in 2025.

The future of the Meta Quest Pro remains uncertain, but recent reports indicate that it hasn’t been canceled despite some premature rumors. However, it faces stiff competition from the Apple Vision Pro, which Apple claims is highly popular. Meta, the owner of Facebook, has apparently formed a partnership with LG to develop a significantly improved sequel to the Quest Pro, as reported by the Korean publication Maeil Business Newspaper.

Initially, Meta had struck a deal with LG Display for OLED microdisplays, but this partnership has expanded to include contributions from other LG subsidiary companies, such as batteries from LG Energy and various components from LG Innotek.

The upcoming headset is expected to launch in 2025 with a price tag of $2,000. The Quest Pro was initially priced at $1,500 but was later reduced to $1,000. Both price points are considerably lower than the expected $3,500 price of Apple’s “spatial computer,” which is set to launch next year. As a result, they may not directly compete in terms of pricing.

Details about the improvements featured in the Meta Quest Pro 2 (or whatever it ends up being called) are currently unavailable. However, the use of OLED microdisplays is expected to increase the resolution from the Quest Pro’s 1,800 x 1,920 pixels per eye, totaling around 7 million pixels. In comparison, the Apple headset boasts a total of 23 million pixels. Meta typically shares information about the VR technology it is developing, so more details about this Pro headset are likely to emerge before 2025.

On the more affordable end of the spectrum, Meta is planning to release the Meta Quest 3 in the fall of this year, priced at $500. Additionally, they have a budget-friendly headset in development, expected to be priced under $200, possibly at $199, for a 2024 release. This lower-priced headset is not part of the LG partnership.
